Modeling Rejects

A percentage of entities are rejected after an activity (due to defects or other criteria) and are removed from the system.

The model used for this example, as well as all of the modeling "how-to" examples, can be found in the ProModel Solutions Café (http://www.promodel.com/solutionscafe/howto/).

Solution

  1. Create a new entity type to represent the rejected entities, otherwise they will count in the output statistics as entities that were accepted.
  2. Create a percentage routing (representing the acceptable entities) from the activity to the next appropriate activity and specify the percentage of time entities are acceptable.
  3. Create a second percentage routing (representing the rejected entities) from the activity to a blank space on the layout (represents a “route to exit”) and specify the percentage of entities that are rejected.
  4. In the New Name field for the reject routing, enter the name of the new entity type you defined for rejected entities.
Example

At a final inspection station in a printed circuit (PC) board assembly line, ten percent of the time the board is defective and is removed from the system (i.e., 10% of the boards are simply scrapped). Otherwise the completed board goes on to packaging.

Solution

A new entity was created called Reject. A route to exit is defined from the Inspection activity with the Percentage set at 10% and Reject selected as the New Name for the entity.
