Modeling How-To's > Working with Variables and Attributes > Defining an Attribute

Defining an Attribute

You want to define an attribute for use in making decisions or collecting information with respect to individual entities during the simulation.

The model used for this example, as well as all of the modeling "how-to" examples, can be found in the ProModel Solutions Café (http://www.promodel.com/solutionscafe/howto/).

Solution

  1. Click on the View Attributes button in the Model Elements section of the Process Simulator ribbon if using Visio 2013 or 2010, or select Attributes from the Process Simulator menu if using Visio 2003 or 2007.
  2. In the table that appears, click on the Attribute tab.
  3. Enter the name you want to give to the attribute.
  4. Specify the data type which determines whether the attribute is going to represent integer (whole number) values or real (decimal) values.
  5. Specify the initial value you want the attribute to have for each entity that gets created.
Example

You would like to define an attribute to track the time an entity starts a particular activity.

Notice that the attribute type is defined as Real since it will be tracking time values in fractions of a minute.
